讲座内容概要：

This presentation questions the conditions of production in the Chinese garment industry and the role played by migrant workers. There are not international migrants but internal migrants coming from poor rural areas to more advanced cities. They share with the former a desire for upward social mobility and their exposure to discriminations. The paper argues that, although in China as elsewhere, garment workers work in difficult conditions for low wages, they are not simply passive victims of an oppressive employment system. This contribution is based on the trajectory of three siblings, met in Yiwu, Zhejiang province. Their professional path are related to the characteristics of the industry, composed of a multitude of small and medium-sized family businesses.
